3 Tips For Preppers And Survivalists
September 27, 2022

A quality radio is an essential part of any survivalist bug out bag. You can use it to quickly communicate with others in times of disaster, or even use it to communicate with your family over vast ranges when the power
goes out.

Getting started in radio can be a little more daunting that you might think. To make joining easier, we have compiled 3 quick tips to help you get on the air quickly to secure an essential piece of your bug out bag.

1. Get a GMRS license

You can join the world of radio in a variety of ways, but when it comes to survivalists or preppers there is no better way to start than with a GMRS license.

Survivalists coming to amateur radio are frequently perplexed by all the rules, regulations, and licensing requirements. But with a GMRS license, all you have to do is pay a small fee. After that, your license is good  for 10 years without testing or studying and it covers your whole family.

A GMRS license allows you to operate on the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and use the channels from 462 – 467 Mhz. This is ideal for covering short distances among family members, and will serve you well when communicating in an emergency scenario.

1.5 Get GMRS radios for you and your family

You will need some reliable and simple to use radios that are going to be robust enough for frequent use, but simple enough a child could use one. For that we Recommend the Echo GMRS radio bundle. Get more info here.

2. Improve Your Radio’s Range With a GMRS Repeater

A repeater is a two-way frequency communication system which receives a frequency from a portable 2-way radio and then retransmits it on another frequency in real time.

This systems is a great way to extend your transmissions signal further to reach more individuals who may not be in range of your radio signal.

This will make it so you will be able to connect with other preppers like you
within the region. This makes it easier to correspond quickly with fellow preppers
and build up a strong network for when things get uncertain.

3. Set Up A Communication Network

A Local communication network will not only allow you to maintain your safety, but also the safety of your community. Creating a local network of family members and a larger network of preppers to talk with via radio, is a great way to improve exchanges of information and create new communities.

Going about this can seem like a bit of a challenge but you don’t have to try it without some assistance. Bridgecom Systems can help you with any questions you have on these topics when it comes to GMRS radio and many more DMR Radio topics. With our staff of expert technicians and 30 years of experience within the radio industry we will always be happy to see what we can do, to get you up and running.

So if you want to get setup with radios and systems you can trust. Visit this link.

15 Items You Should Be Hoarding Today

May 15, 2022 Boston Schneider

We all see it happening. Grocery stores have less supply than ever, the global supply chain is unreliable, and items that we are used to having such easy access to are not nearly as readily available as they once were. It's easy to understand it's more important than ever to be ready for anything. The good news for us, is that we still have time to stock up on the things we know we will need. Especially if things continue to progress they way they have. Here are the 15 items everyone will wish they had during a crisis, and the15 items you should be hoarding today, so you can protect you, your family, and the community around you.

1. Food

Non-perishable food items will be essential to an extended emergency or crisis situation. A lot of non-perishable food kits can last 20 years and even longer so you should have at least one or two longer-kits like this available and ready to use. Stock up on your typical long-lasting canned food, as well as other foods with a long shelf-life at the grocery store. Grabbing a ...

But as a prepper, you know how important it is to have a device that works in every scenario. Today, we’ll be going over the top 5 reasons the AnyTone 878UVII Plus is the best radio for preppers and survivalists.

Many other companies in the market leave their users puzzled and clueless on how to use the product, but at BridgeCom Systems, you can  ensure your success with BridgeCom University. These courses include everything you need to grow your knowledge and ultimately, master your radio. If you’re a Prepper who truly wants to be self-reliable, you know you can never be too overprepared to bug out. One way to do that is with the proper accessories. Not having an extra belt clip is one thing, but when you don’t have spare batteries, antennas, or a speaker mic, your bug out plans can go awry and you could be stuck in a tough spot. Luckily for you, we have tons of accessories that will genuinely complement your radio and improve your DMR experience. You can add tons of different piece of equipment to your 878, which can make it perfect for your specific scenario. Add range, durability, and convenience with customizable AnyTone accessories.

3. Rugged and Durable

The AnyTone 878UVII Plus is one of the most durable radios on the market today. Feel peace of mind, knowing that it will take some serious damage to stop this radio from working properly. Smack it, drop it, slam it, or even get it wet; the AnyTone 878UVII Plus will work without a hiccup. Even when it’s at the very bottom of your bug out bag, your communications remain loud and clear. Just remember that it’s best to have your radio handy for everyday carry because you never know when a situation will arise when you need it.

4. Battery Life

Considering you’ll likely be taking this radio with you most of the time as your daily carry, you may have questions about it’s battery life. AnyTone batteries are specifically designed for going long hours without charging. Allotting an impressive 35 hours of battery life, you’ll never be worried about being left with a dead radio. Even if you somehow use up the battery, you can easily swap it out for your spare. Most preppers understand at any moment; they might need to bug out with a radio that lasts. With your AnyTone handheld, you can enjoy long-lasting radio power without any maintenance.

5. Made for Preppers

The AnyTone 878UVII Plus is one radio that seems like it was made for preppers and survivalists. Its quality craftsmanship allows it to operate in the harshest of environments. EmComm = Emergency Communications

Most people today take our modern communications system for granted and don’t realize that during a major “Act of God” like a natural disastercivil unrest or the loss of the rule of law, which some refer to as a SHTF event (when the $hit Hits The Fan), or even what some speculate is a very real possibility in the modern age of warfare, an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) blast, these systems that we’ve come to rely on such as your cell/mobile phone, your home telephone and the Internet may become unreliable, or even completely inoperable. In fact, it wouldn’t even take a major disaster to disrupt your ability to get help – it could be something as simple as the power going out due to excessive heat or a strong solar flare, which has happened in the past, and that’s when you need an EmComm solution.

As well, you never know where you’ll be when disaster strikes – maybe on vacation, camping, in a high-rise building, visiting friends out of town, on a boat or just enjoying the countryside. In all of these locations, if you were stranded or needed help and the traditional lines of communication were unavailable, you would have perhaps 3 options:

  1. Make your way to a different location where there are working communications. However, this might not be physically possible and you shouldn’t assume that this will really be an option.
  2. Wait for or try to locate the nearest emergency services, but this may not be an option depending on the circumstances. They might not even know there’s an emergency where you are, or may be too busy to respond in a timely manner (or at all).
  3. Try to find a Ham (Amateur Radio), Neighborhood Watch or CERT radio operator nearby and ask them to help, which they’ll most likely do, but they may be inundated with other EmComm requests and not able to help you right away, especially if they’re the only one around with a means of communicating with the outside world.

Or, you can be one of a select but growing population that recognize the importance of having a portable, commercial-grade, battery-operated communications device in situations like these, and which could make the difference between life & death for you, a family member, neighbor or associate. The most popular and effective gear for providing such is a handheld two-way radio (see our selection of SHTF Radios), sometimes also referred to as a walkie-talkie, although some people incorrectly consider that term to denote cheap, toy-like devices such as an FRS radio that you might get from your local superstore, or the toy walkie-talkies you might have owned as a kid. Ham radio operators call a portable two-way radio an HT, which stands for Handy-Talkie or Handheld Transceiver.

A two-way radio, whether it be a handheld, mobile (auto, truck, motorcycle or RV, etc.) or base station, is a radio that can both receive signals and transmit signals (called a transceiver), unlike a scanner, which is just a receiver – our radios all have a scanning capability as well, so they double as scanners and emergency personal, business or ham radios.

Survivalistshomesteaders and SHTF preppers already know the importance of being better safe than sorry and it’s likely that they already own some form handheld radio, if not several stashed in various locations like their car, their BOB (bug-out-bag), and their home emergency kit. Serious preppers usually have a more hardcore SHTF kit with everything they would need for survival during “apocalyptic” times. These radios are simple to use, but beware that not all 2-way radios are suitable for EmComm use, and that’s what we hope we can teach you about here at BetterSafeRadio.

In this section of the site, we’ll be posting a wealth of information about emergency radio communications, including everything you need to know about the various PRS (Personal Radio Service) radio operating bands such as GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service), FRS (Family Radio Service) and CB (Citizen’s Band), and which ones you should consider for your EmComm and emergency radio communications. We also recommend various quality Part 90 LMR superheterodyne dual-band radios that cover both VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) parts of the radio spectrum.

Finally, we’ll discuss the licensing requirements, operating modes, utilizing Ham or Amateur Radio as an alternative to using the PRS bands for emergency comms, other general information about EmComm, and how important we think it is that everyone hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
